Ghost Trees

Four Works from the Doron Sebbag Art Collection, ORS Ltd

Dwek Gallery, Mishkenot Sha’ananim, Jerusalem

May – September 2023

The exhibition “Ghost Trees” focuses on images of the olive tree, and its diverse meanings in the local context. The four works on view were selected from the Doron Sebbag Art Collection, ORS Ltd, which has been in existence for over three decades and spans a wide range of Israeli and international art. Presenting the works side by side seeks to shed light on the engagement with a common local landscape symbol, while attesting to the unique artistic style and personal and poetic inner world of each artist. Each work is based on a set of stylistic contrasts, oscillating between the natural and the artificial, between still life and fantasy, between staged photography and the use of technological means and freehand drawing. These oppositions, alongside the absence of the human figure or its removal from the focal point, give rise to a mythical-fantastic ambience, highlighting the longevity of olive trees in relation to human life, and the work of art’s timelessness.
